Het Hosts-bestand:
In Windows zit een bestand genaamd hosts. In dit bestand zijn IP-adressen in combinatie met een site te vinden. Met het hosts-bestand kan je site’s blokkeren, maar ook een site aan een ander IP-adres koppelen waardoor de verkeerde site wordt geopend.
Waar is het Hosts-bestand te vinden:
Het hosts-bestand is te vinden op de harde schijf in de volgende map:
Windows 9X/ME C:\WINDOWS
Windows 2000 C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Windows XP C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Wat is er in het Hosts-bestand te vinden:
Als je het Hosts-bestand opent met kladblok krijg je te zien wat er in staat.
In het hosts-bestand is één regel die er altijd in staat. Dat is de volgende:
127.0.0.1 localhost
Als er andere regels in staan heb je deze er of zelf ingezet of ze zijn erin gezet door een programma. Er zijn ook schadelijke bestanden (virussen/trojans/spyware) die er regels inzetten. Het gevolg hiervan kan zijn dat je bepaalde site’s niet kan bereiken, maar ook dat je naar een site wordt omgeleidt waar een ander schadelijk bestand te vinden is.
Voorbeelden
Hier staan twee voorbeelden. Het gevolg (voor als dit in je Hosts-bestand staat) is te vinden onder je regel :
127.0.0.1 www.yahoo.nl
www.yahoo.nl is geblokkeerd.
216.239.59.104 www.yahoo.nl
Je wordt omgeleid naar www.google.nl
Blokkeren:
Op de volgende manier kan een site worden geblokkeerd met behulp van het Hosts-bestand:
1. Open het Hosts-bestand met kladblok
2. Begin onder 127.0.0.1 localhost op een nieuwe regel.
3. Typ 127.0.0.1 in
4. Druk één keer op tab.
5. Vul de site in waar het om gaat. Als voorbeeld neem ik www.google.nl
6. Je hebt nu een regel staan. Bijvoorbeeld 127.0.0.1 www.google.nl
7. Sla het bestand op via bestand->opslaan.
8. Je bent nu klaar en de site is geblokkeerd. In dit geval is dat www.google.nl
Verwijzingen:
Een verwijzing kan je doen door een IP-adres van een andere site neer te zetten. Bijvoorbeeld:
216.239.59.104 www.yahoo.nl
Het IP-adres 216.239.59.104 hoort bij Google, maar wordt nu gekoppeld aan www.yahoo.nl
MVPS Hosts:
MVPS Hosts is een bestand waarmee je het originele Hosts-bestand kunt overschrijven. Door MVPS Hosts wordt een groot aantal site’s geblokkeerd. Het gaat om site’s waardoor malware wordt verspreid. Het kan echter voorkomen dat jij wel MVPS Hosts wilt gebruiken, maar dat je wel naar een site wil die geblokkeerd is. Je kan dan naar het Hosts-bestand toegaan en de regel met die site uit het Hosts-bestand verwijderen. Het zoeken kan je het beste doen met de zoekfunctie van kladblok (bewerken->zoeken). Na het verwijderen van de regel kan je de wijzigingen opslaan via bestand->opslaan.

Problemen:
Als je door veranderingen in het Hosts-bestand problemen hebt kan je met TheHoster het originele HOSTS-bestand terugzetten. Dit kan je doen op de volgende manier: Pak het bestand hoster uit naar een eigen map. Start daarna TheHoster en klik op “Restore Original Hosts”.
media convert service

Media Convert is a new online service which makes it possible to convert a lot of file formats before downloading the file to your computer. All you have to do is add an url and select the input format. Select the format that you want to convert the file to and click on convert. The only restriction is that the file has a maximum size of 150 megabytes, everything above that amount will not be processed.
There are so many supported file formats that it is impossible to name them all. I try to list the most important ones. It supports the most important text formats, such as doc, txt, pdf, rtf and Open Office, many zip formats such as zip, rar and cab. It supports 17 movie formats such as avi, mpg, mov and mp4 and more than 40 audio formats.
The process itself takes some time depending on the size of the file which seems to be the major factor of course. A second option that the service offers is to upload a file and let the service convert the file for you. The time that this process takes depends of the upload speed of your internet connection.
The major advantages of using the media convert service is that you can use their service to convert a needed file into a format that you can edit and read using your computer and that you do not need to install a software to convert files anymore.
